I am Samuel MacArthur, an independent memorial mason and master lettercarver based near Marlborough, Wiltshire.
I design, carve and install bespoke memorial headstones, grave markers and hand-cut stone inscriptions for families, churches and burial grounds across Wiltshire and neighbouring counties.
All memorials are designed, cut, shaped, carved and finished entirely by hand by me, using traditional mallet and chisel. No CNC, no machine-cut lettering, and no intermediaries.

Experience & Qualifications
I have over 45 years of professional experience in memorial stonework, lettercarving and sculpture.
I am City & Guilds qualified, a member of the Master Letter Carvers Association, and a NAMM-registered memorial fixer.
Materials & Craft
Stone is personally selected from UK quarries, including limestone, sandstone and slate, chosen for durability, character and suitability for the location.
What Happens Next
Arranging a memorial can feel unfamiliar. The process is handled carefully and step by step, with clear guidance throughout.
1. Initial Conversation
We begin with a phone call or email to discuss your wishes, the cemetery or churchyard, and any regulations that may apply. There is no obligation at this stage.
2. Design & Advice
I advise on suitable stone, proportions, lettering style and layout. If required, a design drawing or written specification can be provided for approval.
3. Permissions & Applications
Where permissions are required, I can assist with applications to the relevant cemetery authority or diocese. This includes ensuring the memorial complies with local churchyard or burial ground regulations.
4. Carving & Preparation
Once approved, the memorial is carved entirely by hand in the workshop. Care is taken at every stage to ensure clarity, balance and long-term durability.
5. Installation
When ready, the memorial is installed in accordance with current safety standards. I am a NAMM-registered memorial fixer.
6. Aftercare
Advice on care and maintenance can be provided, and additional inscriptions or future work can be carried out when required.
Each memorial is individually proportioned and lettered to ensure clarity, balance and long-term legibility.
No machine-cut lettering and no intermediaries — all work is carried out personally.
